Singapore August 29, 1994
Good Morning!
Several months ago my cousin Fran made a round trip by train from
Central California to San Diego and back again. In that 48 hour
period she was exposed to:
An earthquake that caused 10's of billions of dollars
in damage and took 50+ lives.
A suicide - The train upon which she was riding dismembered
a man who had thrust himself in its path.
A hostage-taking situation in an apartment complex.
Admittedly a bit extreme for a two day period of time! Nevertheless,
reflective of the blight upon this Country.
With my cousin's experience in the back of my mind I was reflecting
in the book of Hosea that describes Israel during her lowest spiritual
ebb when God simply removed His hand of blessing and protection
from her.
I could have sworn I was reading about American in Time
Magazine or Newsweek:
"There is only cursing, lying and murder, stealing and adultery;
They break all bounds, and bloodshed follows bloodshed.
"Because of this the land mourns, and all who live in it waste away;
The beasts of the field and the birds of the air and the fish
of the sea are dying.
"My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge...because
you have ignored the law of your God..." (Hosea
4:2, 3, 6)
Living amidst a society that is crumbling under the weight of
its sin, it is comforting to know that:
"...The eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him,
on those who hope in His loving kindness, to deliver their
soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine."
(Psalm 33:18, 19)
Therefore, let us make sure
"Our soul waits for the Lord" because
we understand that "He is our help and our shield."
(Psalm 33:20)
