Presenting ...
... a weekly letter of encouragement.
November 29, 1995
Good Morning!
As a novice swimmer slogging through a mile a day I was struck by an article in Swim Magazine chronicling the feats of the world's greatest long distance swimmers. Here is a sampler:
The English Channel (21 miles) has been swum by 474 people for a total of 600 crossings.
Mike Read has swum it 31 times and Alison Streeter 20 times.
Jon Erikson first swam the Channel at age 14 and some years later made a triple crossing...in 38.27 hours.
But get this: Vicki Keith in 1989 swam the English Channel, the Catalina Channel (also 21 miles) and the Straits of Juan de Fuca (between Canada and the U. S. mainland) - all butterfly !
And how about Lynn Cox who swam the Bering Straits, a distance of 4 to 6 miles in 38 degree temperature.
What we are talking about here is FOCUS. DETERMINATION. GUTS. ...And all for a dying wreath! (I Corinthians 9:25).
Let me ask you: Can you and I bring into our walk with Christ the same quality of:
FOCUS - "FIXING OUR EYES ON JESUS..." (Hebrews 12:2)
DETERMINATION - "I HAVE FOUGHT A GOOD FIGHT, I HAVE KEPT THE FAITH,
I HAVE FINISHED THE COURSE." (II Timothy 4:7)
GUTS - "I DO NOT CONSIDER MY LIFE OF ANY ACCOUNT AS DEAR TO MYSELF
IN ORDER THAT I MIGHT FINISH MY COURSE, AND THE MINISTRY WHICH
I RECEIVED FROM THE LORD JESUS CHRIST..." (Acts 20:24)
So the next time you feel like you are drowning spiritually, are ready to call it quits ("It's too far!"), or are spiritually frozen, remember: FOCUS. DETERMINATION. GUTS. These are the qualities of world class swimmers and of serious followers of Jesus Christ.
Have a great week!
